Windows 10 Tech Tip: Hidden features

Posted July 21, 2017 by Dan Madigan

Windows 10 is full of new features. Many of these, unfortunately, are hidden to everyday users. Here are a few tricks to improve your computing experience.

Automatically save storage space

Over time, your pc will fill with useless junk without you even knowing it. Items in your recycle bin and temporary files will suck up your storage space. Go to: settings > system > storage and enable the Storage Sense option. Windows will automatically clear out useless temporary files and delete items in your recycle bin that are over 30 days old.

Night Light

Windows 10 has a handy feature designed to help spare your eyes as you browse away in the evening. Screens emit blue light which can keep you up at night. The Night Light feature adjusts your screen’s color temperature during after-dark sessions making it easier to fall asleep when you are done.

To activate Night Light go to: Settings > system > display. Once you have enabled this feature you can fine tune its behavior to your liking.

The Windows 10 Creators Update adds a helpful tool for end users when they encounter problems. All trouble-shooting tools are in one location. Go to: Settings > update & security > troubleshoot. When in trouble go here first.

Cast Videos to TV’s

No Chromecast? Not an issue any longer since the November update. But 'YouTube This' update enables the Edge browser to easily cast media to Miracast or DNLA equipped devices. It will not work with DRM-protected streams like Hulu and Netflix but You Tube works fine.

To beam to your YouTube TV open You Tube in Edge. There will be 3 horizontal dots in the upper right corner, click on the dots. A window will drop down that will show all available Miracast/DLNA devices. Choose the device you want and away you go!
